As a carpenter, I learned to appreciate the dynamic characteristics of wood. I loved the satisfaction of building solid purposeful structures. This evolved into a desire to create more intriguing pieces from the same material. I was determined to keep my mind open to the possibilities…
My love of sailing, surfing, and fishing have led me to some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. From the coast of Maine to the South Pacific, I realized the raw and organic forms created by the oceans. I had found the inspiration for my life’s work, a profound and humbling gift from the sea.
My appreciation for the sea has created a desire to always be near it, if not in it. One day, I was combing a beach off the coast of Maine and was literally awe struck by a sea weathered, sun bleached, salt cured piece of driftwood. It was magnificently detailed and coated in a subtle silvery wash that accentuated its intricacies. I was struck by the beauty of the piece and by its limitless potential. It would become both my muse and my medium. I deeply relate to something that has traveled and been transformed by the elements over time. There is a mystery ingrained in every piece…
I choose pieces of driftwood that stand out as natural sculptures. I look for pieces that have the potential to become something more. I study each piece. Sometimes I understand where it is going immediately, other times it takes years. I’ve come to accept that my art is as much about patience and reflection as it is about passion. Nature provides me with the form, the texture, the color and sooner or later an inherent plan. I follow it and by combining metals, glass, and textiles – one of a kind furniture is made. I’ve marveled at driftwood on beaches all over the world. But I’m always drawn back to Maine’s magnificent coastline, lakes, and rivers. My work is formed from these amazing places. This is Designs Adrift.
